For the beer connoisseurs out there, The Bermondsey Beer Mile probably sounds familiar and if not you should definitely check it out. It is essentially a stretch of artisan breweries and taprooms spanning the streets under the railway arches in Bermondsey, South London. There are around 15 breweries and taprooms to date, all offering a great selection of beers and ciders.
One of them has a very special place in my heart though - Southwark Brewing Company. It was the place where back in 2020, just before Covid took over I was hosting a weekend with fellow ‘spotters’ from across Europe. The night of our party coincided with the official Brexit date and around midnight the owner of the brewery Peter held a speech about how sad it is that Brexit did become a reality but also how glad he is to have people from all over in one place on that night. It was truly a moving moment.
Obviously, you see why I am a bit biased toward the brewery but the emotional part aside it is a great place with a very chilled atmosphere. Southwark Brewing company has a range of traditional beers such as ales, IPAs, porter, and bitter - all really fresh and available on draft or bottle, but also to take away. There is no food on the premises but you can bring your own. Maltby street market is just a short walk from the brewery and makes a great spot to grab a bite if open.
