Trophy by Wim Delvoye, located close to the entrance of the MUDAM- The Contemporary Art Museum of Luxembourg, is a sculpture that most people quickly walk past, and if they are with children, they will shield their eyes. My first meeting with this piece caused me to laugh with discomfort, however, my subsequent visits have caused me to ponder on the artist’s intentions and potential meanings behind this work.
Wim Delvoye is a Belgian artist who apparently is no stranger to making art that others may find offensive or at the very least, confusing. According to Bored Panda, out of 15 pieces of art, Trophy is the 5th ugliest piece of art, according to its readers. After having scrolled through all 15, I disagree, because the deer, in my opinion, actually looks like something and give the viewer something to ponder.
On busier days, I must admit that I have enjoyed sitting nearby and watching people’s reactions to Trophy. It has been interesting to see how many adults smirk or comment to those with them that perhaps this statue should be taken away. Meanwhile, many children just say “Look mommy, the deer are playing”.
It is rumored that Trophy is a commentary on Luxembourg’s continued practice of hunting. However, I believe it’s a commentary on how man is actually not significantly different from the animals it displaces. What do you think it means?
