Swedes may be known for their love of snaps and brändvin (literally translated: “burnt wine”), but in my experience, they are equally enthusiastic about gin. That is why the Vin & Ginbar (Wine & Gin Bar) has been such a popular gathering spot in central Malmö since it opened in the fall of 2016.
The Vin & Ginbar is actually the second venue of Paddy’s Irish Pub and Restaurant and is located directly across the charming Lejonpassagen (Lion Passageway) that runs parallel to the restaurant. Here the wine cellar boasts more than 150 different types of organic wines, but for me, the star of the show is the amazing repertoire of gin cocktails made with great flair and plenty of ice by their highly-skilled bartenders.
Watching your drink being expertly made at the Vin & Ginbar is a big part of the enjoyment. This is the first place I was ever served a gin and tonic in the type of glass that is specifically made for it. Not a tall highball glass (which also works), but in a copa glass with a large, balloon-shaped bowl that helps concentrate the botanicals on the nose and leaves plenty of room for the all-important ice.
With as many as 75 different kinds of gin in the premises, an extensive variety of tonics, and a garden of garnishes and techniques for combining them, there is always something new for a gin lover to experience. If the tangy taste of juniper and quinine gets your senses going, don't miss it!
