Is there any other coffee in the Mile-End? Café Olimpico trumps all. Expect strong, velvety smooth Italian coffee – spot on every time.
As a perpetual coffee seeker, that green awning and sunny terrace is my Holy Grail. It’s perfect for people watching, for a pit stop to St. Viateur bagels and a dependable quality fix for under $ 3. Olimpico has delivered perfect cappuccinos in terracotta colored cups since the 70s and they’re not keeping up with any trend. It has a pulse in this small neighborhood and has been a part of the daily routine for so many.
Be warned, morning and weekend queues can be discouraging but it’s worth the wait. Be ready to give your order by the time you’re eying the biscotti window – you’ll be called on by the endearing “Bello” or “Bella” and by name soon enough. No, they don’t have soy. They offer the classics plus Mini Latte, Café crema (coffee sorbet) and to celebrate sunny weather, Latte Freddo (Cold Latte) which remains unrivaled. The “Remix”, a marriage of Latte Freddo and Caffe di Crema, is worth the splurge.
Grab a bistro chair, watch people pour in, witness the energy of the grind. Or better yet, take a bench seat on the beloved outdoor terrace for some rays.
