One of the most surprising little spots can be found in the park on the southern end of Roosevelt Island. A small wild cat sanctuary stands near the east entrance to the park and right next to the Strecker Memorial Laboratory. The Wildlife Freedom Foundation’s Cat Sanctuary is home to about 22 cats! Feral cats are surprisingly common in some neighborhoods in the city so it is heartwarming to see them being taken care of out on Roosevelt Island!
The small fenced in area contains a big wooden house to provide the cats shelter in bad weather. A hole in the fence allows them to come and go as they please. They also get fed regularly, the bowls are visible on the outside of the house. Each of the cats even has a name! If you like cats, this little hidden gem in the park is a fun little spot to see.
