Sorolla murals

Paula from New York

About me I'm a native New Yorker and a flight attendant for an international airline. My work takes me all over the world, but I'm always happy to return home to New York City! I was born and raised on Staten Island, went to college in upstate New York, and I now live in Astoria, Queens. ""Hispanic Society Museum & Library" in New York is perfect for art lovers. If you don't know Sorolla, this is a great chance to discover him!"

I'm going to give you the bad news first: unfortunately, the Hispanic Society Museum has been closed since 2017 for long-term renovations. Ready for the good news? The library and Sorolla Room are still open to visitors!

Despite extensive renovations, the Hispanic Society Museum is well worth the visit by merit of the Sorolla room, which contains magnificent murals by Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida. Together, 14 canvases form a panoramic mural that celebrates the regional cultures of Spain. From fishermen to flamenco dancers, Sorolla depicts the many faces of Sorolla's home country. Sorolla is known worldwide for his expert use of composition and light, and this room showcases all his greatest artistic skills.

To visit the museum you must make an appointment through the website. Your visit will be led by a museum guide, who will surely illuminate the paintings even further. When I visited, my tour lasted about 1 hour. The guide was very knowledgeable and charismatic, easily responding to questions in both English and Spanish. He guided us through the murals, sharing information about Sorolla's life, his work, and the paintings themselves. The tour was well-attended by locals and travelers alike, all clearly art lovers. If you are an art lover yourself, you will be among friends at the Sorolla Room!

Also worth noting is the beautiful courtyard outside the Hispanic Society. Take your time to admire all the sculptures and architectural details of the Audobon Courtyard.

New York City is a world capital, but also my hometown! I've found everything I love right here: an exci...

His malleable, buttery creations are a sight to behold! They can be seen closeup outside on the buildings massive iron doors, and inside where floral motifs adorn the central teller’s 'pen' and customer desks that line the walls.
