I’m going to give you the bad news first: unfortunately, the Hispanic Society Museum has been closed since 2017 for long-term renovations. Ready for the good news? The library and Sorolla Room are still open to visitors!

Despite extensive renovations, the Hispanic Society Museum is well worth the visit by merit of the Sorolla room, which contains magnificent murals by Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida. Together, 14 canvases form a panoramic mural that celebrates the regional cultures of Spain. From fishermen to flamenco dancers, Sorolla depicts the many faces of Sorolla’s home country. Sorolla is known worldwide for his expert use of composition and light, and this room showcases all his greatest artistic skills.

To visit the museum you must make an appointment through the website. Your visit will be led by a museum guide, who will surely illuminate the paintings even further. When I visited, my tour lasted about 1 hour. The guide was very knowledgeable and charismatic, easily responding to questions in both English and Spanish. He guided us through the murals, sharing information about Sorolla’s life, his work, and the paintings themselves. The tour was well-attended by locals and travelers alike, all clearly art lovers. If you are an art lover yourself, you will be among friends at the Sorolla Room!

Also worth noting is the beautiful courtyard outside the Hispanic Society. Take your time to admire all the sculptures and architectural details of the Audobon Courtyard.
