If you are a bibliophile, history buff, or art history nerd like myself, The Morgan Library & Museum should be at the top of your list when you visit New York City.
The museum is located on the former site of Pierpont Morgan's personal New York home. The buildings have been meticulously preserved, and you can tour Morgan's personal study where you'll see his treasured artwork, steel-encased rare book vault, and a grand portrait of the man himself. The crown jewel of the museum is Morgan's personal library, which astounds the eye with the sheer number of books, and its opulent artistry. Tapestries, stained glass, and painted ceilings decorate the library from floor to ceiling.
In addition to preserving the legacy of Pierpont Morgan, the museum also displays rotating exhibitions. They utilize holdings from the library's own collections as well as loans from partner museums around the world. This partnership allows the museum to do a deep dive into the history and work of artists and authors.
The shop and cafe are worth a visit too! Located in the Morgan's former family mansion, you can take a peek at their grand staircase as you enter. The shop is filled with great gifts for the bibliophiles in your life!
The Morgan also promotes the arts with many cultural programs including lectures related to the art on display, musical performances, and film screenings. You can find a full list of upcoming programs on their website.
