Café de la Mairie is as much time capsule as it is a cafe. And, if you happen to be around Saint Sulpice on a Sunday it's a great place for people watching. The place is in a word 'convivial'. I got interested in going because I'd read that French writer Georges Perec used to frequent the place, and write here.
These days even though there's no trace that Perec was ever there, step inside Café de la Mairie and just look around at its fixtures and fittings. They're of a certain era. Lot of formica and well-shined brass. The style certainly propels you back to how 1970s Paris must have looked.
Café de la Mairie has the feeling of a real local eatery making a great stop off for lunch. On the menu there's decent food like omelets and salads. For that reason this place is a ride worth seeking out. If only to soak up the ambience of an era gone-by.
