Even most locals don't know about this place! If you flew into the Philadelphia Airport then you most likely flew right over the fort. I only went to it because I flew over it so many times I told myself I needed to check it out!
Fort Mifflin is an unusual place. It is beautiful and well kept and you are transported to the 1770s. Until, that is, a gigantic airplane flies nearly over the top of you. So you have this mix of Revolutionary war and modern day technology.
For me, bringing a lunch to Fort Mifflin and laying down and watching the airplanes overhead knowing that you are in one of the few star forts in the Mid Atlantic is a great way to spend an afternoon. You can also walk into the small woods behind the Fort and walk the Delaware River on nice days.
I rarely see anyone else there so most of the time I have the place to myself or the friends that I have brought with me.
I urge you, if you have time and a means of transportation, to get out of the city, by just 5-10 minutes, and take in this near forgotten piece of history and beauty.
