I’d love to share one of Rotterdam’s hidden gems that remains a secret to many locals, but it’s been a personal haven for over half a century. Nestled in the Kralingse Bos, there’s a charming spot named "de Eekhoorn", reminiscent of a quaint fairy-tale cottage straight out of a Hansel and Gretel story. It's this authenticity and nostalgia that makes it so special to me.
What sets de Eekhoorn apart is its commitment to organic produce. The owners have curated 80 percent of the menu to be organic, which resonates with my appreciation for sustainable and ethical eating practices – good for us and kind to animals. The selection ranges from classic fries and sandwiches to snacks and other homemade dishes. Each item carries a sense of personal touch and care, which is palpable in every bite.
During the summer, it transforms into a perfect pit stop for an ice cream, adding to its charm. I find it’s these simple pleasures that often create the most joy. It’s not just about being a consumer but about experiencing a place that feels like an extension of home – a connection that I believe is the essence of what we cherish at Spotted by Locals.
