When it comes to family-owned businesses in the city, Haight Street Market (Gus' Market) is far and away the most well-known and successful. Having lived in the area all my life, I literally grew up on Gus' food. I'd come here both for impromptu lunch runs as well as weekend grocery missions. Every day, all day, this place is hopping; offering both high-quality groceries and home-cooked food, it's a true neighborhood staple. They have everything from a Poke-bar to a coffee shop to literally dozens of Kombucha options. The staff is always friendly, the music is always great, and the food is always top-notch. Even for someone just passing through, I recommend stopping to enjoy a snack on their store-front patio.
Sadly Gus passed away a few years ago, but his family continues to run the store, carrying on his legacy. At his funeral was everyone from store customers to the mayor of San Francisco--a true testament to how important this place's role is in the community.
The market is halfway down the block from the Haight-Ashbury intersection. The 33, 6, 7 and 43 buses all go to Haight, which itself is definitely a must-see destination in the city.
