Barbarea is hot new restaurant in Põhjala Tehas. So, remember Karjase Sai, the hottest bakery in town ? Well, Chef Kenneth Karjane and his partner Eva Korvas now run Barbarea restaurant after Karjase closes for the day. On the second floor, from 17:00, they serve appetisers, pizza, dessert and natural wines.
Their fresh burrata with homemade pesto is to die for and the bread, which you can buy on your way out, is considered one of the best sourdoughs out there. The pizza of course is also sourdough-based, a mix of Estonian and Italian flours. You can find the traditional Margarita or the one with their homemade nduja sausage. Do not miss the Malawach (a flaky bread made from croissant dough) served with a dip of labneh, alliums, and whitefish roe. Sounds exciting, right?
The helpful and very well-informed waiters will help you choose not only the food but the wine or beer or non-alcoholic drinks. They serve almost exclusively natural wines - orange wines which can be a challenge if you have not tried them. Do not worry, you are in good hands and they will tell you all about it. There is also Mikkeller beer, although you can find Estonian Põhjala as well. As you understood, they have a good level of drinks! Hip, interesting and definitely far from banal. This goes for the food as well of course.
