In Tampere during the month of March, it's time to play some outdoor hockey again. And this is not just typical hockey... This Reiskahöntsyt hockey world championship tournament is played with slippers on, not ice skates!
This tournament started already in 2012, — the previous year the decision was made to have a charity event such as this. Every spring since 2012, the tournament has taken place at Koulukadun kenttä ice rink in March. The enrolment fees of the teams are given to charity, but for spectators, the entrance is free of charge.
This event is a great opportunity to see how crazy we Finns are for ice hockey. There are teams of both men and women and of course, the title of the world championship is played in both series. I had a chance to play in one of the ladies' teams in 2012, and I can tell you it was a lot of fun!
Usually, during the month of March, the weather can be extremely nice, with blue skies and a bright sun, and the sun actually already feels like it's warming. Families and friends of players, but also other people, such as Finnish ice hockey celebrities, come and enjoy the event for the whole weekend. As in outdoors, grilled sausages and some sweet pastries & coffee can be bought from the canteen for a very reasonable price.
All and all this event gives me such a good feeling year after year, see you in Reiskahöntsyt this year!
