Dizengoff Sculpture Tel Aviv – A piece of history

Art & culture
"The "Dizengoff Sculpture" is very special to me as my uncle – David Zundelovitch - made it for the celebration of 100 years of Tel Aviv."

Rothschild bul. is my favorite place in Tel Aviv, maybe even in Israel. The boulevard is long and vast and at various sections there are public sculptures that tell the history of the city in various events.

This sculpture is very special to me as my uncle – David Zundelovitch, made it for the celebration of 100 years of Tel Aviv. There are a lot of man-on-a-horse sculptures around the world, but this one is unique as it represents Meir Dizengoff, the first Mayor of Tel Aviv, with his beloved mare (female horse). I think it's a nice continuation of the humanity act shown by Dizengoff, not only to the community in those days, but also to the mare, as he wrote a short story telling us of his relationship with her (for example, the nice conditions the old man agreed to give the mare; her fear of motorcycles or the bundle of cables that workers laid in the ground for the phones; her knowledge of the Mayor's regular route and the people he knew).

The sculpture was placed in front of Dizengoff house, one of the first houses in Tel Aviv that was donated by him in 1930 to be an Art museum (he lived at the top level till his death). In 1948 the hall of this building was the scene of the Israeli Declaration of the state of Israel.
