Would you like to see a 21st-century version of a threepenny opera? How about taking part in a long-term discussion spanning multiple locations and dates, about the future of art, with art futurists themselves?
1646 is a project space where you can view, and often participate in, art that runs towards the intellectual and the avant-garde. The space isĀ managed by an international mix of visual artists who are focused on supporting emerging artists while also bringing established artists to a broader audience. The space itself is often used for art performances, artist Q&A sessions, guest lectures, and collaborations with similar-minded art collectives.
The best way to enjoy 1646 is to follow them on Facebook or subscribe to their newsletter, as events often pop up, sometimes on short notice. I’ve shown up at 1646 based on a last-minute invite, only to be thrust into a one-person performance piece that involved multiple wardrobe changes, a maze the audience needed to enter (and emerge from!), and trumpet playing by someone clearly self-taught.
But…was it art? I’m not sure, but I certainly enjoyed talking about it afterwards!
