Living in a city, I am always on the lookout for green spaces to keep myself grounded. If you look for them, you will discover that every city around the world offers some secret gardens and parks, most of them only known to locals.
In Antwerp, I recently discovered the hidden Garden of the Academy, located on Mutsaardstraat. A small, intimate and peaceful place that will make you feel at ease.
Initially, the Academy Garden was designed in 1841 as an open-air museum for the City of Antwerp and was sort of a predecessor of the Middelheim Museum. However, during the years that followed, the garden lost its purpose as an open-air museum. Luckily for us, the garden has recently been re-opened to the public and is now used as an exhibition space by students to expose artworks. In short, the Academy Garden is a true hidden gem in the city and is the perfect place for a peaceful pause during your next city walk!
