Filopappou crag is located on the hill from which it takes its name, beside the Acropolis hill and it serves as an everyday training venue for climbers living or working nearby.
I find amazing the fact that you can reach the cliff by metro and climb in the city center, as the crag is located 1 km away from the Siggrou – Fix subway station (you can find the exact location by entering the coordinates: 37.9654579, 23.7173125 in your GPS or map app).
There, you will find two different areas: a great one with traversers and boulder problems which can prove very efficient for strength and endurance training and another one with very nice bolted routes. Although the routes are short (around 10 meters) you can´t miss the views from the top: the whole South area of the city, the sea, Salamina and Egina can be seen from there. It’s really worth the effort to reach the summit!
The route levels are between 5b and 6c+ which make Filopappou a perfect spot to climb if you are new to this sport.
As it’s facing south, you can climb there any time you want during the year. In summer, the Sun will be a problem until 13:00. I find climbing on mild winter days to be very pleasant.
