Imbiss is the German term used to describe a humble eatery, and while wandering around Berlin, you're likely to stumble upon these spots where you're almost always guaranteed a no-frills, delicious meal at an affordable price.
Such is the case with Tori-Katsu. Operating since 1968 in the district of Schöneberg, this restaurant claims to be the first-ever Japanese Imbiss in Germany. They stand by that title so confidently that they even offer a €10,000 reward to anyone who can prove otherwise.
Curiosities aside, this small, often crowded Japanese joint specializes in katsu curry - breaded, deep-fried chicken served with rice and drenched in a rich curry sauce - a dish that has easily won the hearts (and stomachs) of schnitzel-loving Germans. The menu also offers vegetarian options, soups, and other katsu variations with different sauces, though the curry version is undoubtedly the star of the show.
Unlike other Imbisses, where the focus is mainly on the food and less on decoration, Tori-Katsu has spared no effort in creating a warm and inviting atmosphere for its customers. Inside, the Japanese-style décor and quirky hand-drawn promotional signs that cover the walls add an authentic charm to the place. Sitting in the cozy dining room, surrounded by Japanese artwork and sipping an ice-cold Kirin while watching the busy chefs work in the open kitchen, will transport you to Tokyo, if only for a little while.
