The Danube Bend refers to a curve of the Danube River not far from Budapest. It’s an area full of exceptionally beautiful hiking routes and tons of cultural events such as concerts and daytime parties. Besides the beautiful sandy beaches by the river, there are also farmers’ markets, cute cafés, and bars in the towns and villages along the way.
Hop on a train from Budapest’s city center at Nyugati train station, and in about 40 minutes you’ll arrive at Nagymaros-Visegrád. During the warmer months, you can also take/rent a bike and find a quiet meadow by the water to enjoy the view and the sun by the river or check if there are any local events nearby (e.g. Nomád bár, Zsigi büfé, Tandem, Piknik, Zsengélő). Most weekends, you can catch something fun, unlike anything you could find in Budapest. On Saturdays until 1 p.m., the farmers’ market is your best bet.
In the colder months, I like to look up a suitable hiking route in the area and after the hike, sit in one of the cozy restaurants like Piknik Manufaktúra and enjoy a warm drink or meal. If you are looking for something even more special, try out the Tandem's sauna, and once you’ve warmed up enough, dip into the freezing Danube for a full experience.
It’s a much slower, very different experience to be in Nagymaros compared to the city's pace in Budapest.
Besides Nagymaros, Verőce, Zebegény, and Visegrád are also wonderful places to discover.
