This peculiar name of the pub is not a metaphor, it actually was a famous confession box in Dublin back in 1916.
During the 1916 uprising, there were unfriendly soldiers positioned where the Department of Education is now (just across the street between the pub and the Pro-Cathedral), shooting Catholics trying to get to the cathedral for prayer and confessions.
Not many people know that there is a network of tunnels under the Dublin City Centre and one leg of them was leading from the cathedral to this very pub, and the dedicated priests were coming to the pub into the dedicated place upstairs to take the confessions. Hence the name of the pub. You can still go upstairs to the pub to see the very place where priests were meeting Irish people in secret.
What is not a secret now is how open and welcoming this place is. The lovely two ladies behind the bar will make you feel at home, well.. Irish home that is, and the regulars will make sure you will know your bearings when you decide to move on, if you do that is. ;)
This is the smallest place in Dublin where complete strangers talk to each other like they’ve been friends for years.
