As I also wrote in the article about Caffè Letterario, "Le Murate" was the prison of Florence for more than a century, until 1985. After that the area was more or less abandoned, but a few years ago it underwent a very successful refurbishment process, which gave birth to many new low-rent flats, a "cultural café" and a restaurant, Le Carceri (that means "The Prisons" in the old language of Florence). This is the place I want to tell you about.
Of course, I don't go there just because the place is nicely designed and retains many details from its past "function". The main attraction, in my opinion, is the food they serve: typical Italian main courses and good pizzas (most of them named after some Italian or famous foreign jail). It is also possible to write a message on the walls, or you can just read the ones people have already left behind – some of them are very funny, some are actually very good reviews.
Buon appetito!
