The creation of the new HafenCity (harbor city) is one of the biggest architectural projects in Europe. With the goal to not only serve the industrial needs of the city, but to actually combine the traditional harbor area with apartment buildings, restaurants, schools or playgrounds, the area of more than two million square meters is being completely rebuilt. Many parts are still under construction (and will be for the next years), but you can see a whole neighborhood in the making.
Slowly but surely, new gems are being formed. One of them is the new recreation area Baakenpark. If you are interested in architecture and are looking for the perfect mixture of urban industrial harbor spirit and relaxation, this is a good choice. The park is located on a peninsula and offers a playground as well as a soccer field, lovely picnic spots under cherry trees and a hill for a nice view over HafenCity.
Another plus: the subway stop HafenCity Universität nearby is a special one – maritime sounds and almost surreal light effects will surround you once you get off the train and on the weekends you even get to enjoy a light show and classical music once every hour.
