Deichstrasse translates into Dykestreet and it was built a long, long time ago, when the merchants of Hamburg still lived, stored their wares and worked in the old city. Some of the houses date back to 1659 and the oldest storage used to be here from 1465 on.
Most of the houses were destroyed by a big fire which started in the storage of house number 38 during a very hot May. The fire stopped in the city center, after burning for four days and destroying most of the historical houses downtown. The heat/fire and wood were a very bad combination...
I love to come here and see the houses from the waterside. You need to sneak through one of the two small tunnels between the houses and you'll have this wonderful view towards these old Hamburg houses. Nowadays the area is well equipped with restaurants, so: if you are hungry, go and check the French galettes and crepes by Ti Breizh in number 39.
