If you love great movies off the beaten track of the typical Hollywood movies, this is a perfect place for you. The FilmRaum (=movie room) has dedicated itself to contribute especially to the cinematic cultural life in Hamburg. As a repertory cinema, their program offers a lot of exciting, intellectual arthouse movies (usually in original language), oftentimes with the director present and available for discussions about their work. One of their passions is the short film genre. Parts of the yearly international short film festival in Hamburg are shown at the FilmRaum. I also recommend their monthly event called Shorts Attack, where they show several international short films, all devoted to a certain topic. As a member, you can even rent DVDs for free, which you will most probably not find in a lot of conventional video shops or online downloads.
But apart from their great cinematic program, they also contribute a huge part to the musical and literary culture. The owner organizes concerts and readings by interesting artists from all over the world on a frequent basis. Just check their website for their events!
Right next to the FilmRaum, you will find the vegetarian and vegan café ZeitRaum, which belongs to the FilmRaum as well. This is a wonderful place to have a coffee, choose one of their magazines or newspapers, relax with locals and enjoy the calm atmosphere of the area of Eimsbüttel.
