The Chug Club opened up in September 2015 and is already considered one of Hamburgs's best bars!? Let's find out why.
Okay, it is not the worst of all locations. Just off-Reeperbahn, right between the old St. Pauli and the new. Between run-down titty bars and expensive new lofts. From the outside, the Chug Club looks the right kind of shabby.
Inside you can see that somebody built a shrine for the Agave. Or rather its derivative, the Tequila. It feels like a Mexican cantina. You kind of expect to see 'Machete' sitting in the corner. A temple for Tequila, Mezcal and for alcohol in general. I like. Mucho.
Meet Betty Kupsa. It's her temple. She used to be one of the centerpieces of the 'Le Lion', which is widely referred to as one of the best bars in Europe. So, she knows the secret alchemy of high-end drinks. Plus, she's one of the warmest people you will ever meet in St. Pauli. And she loooves what she is doing.
The bold and simple concept of the Chug Club: Chugs. Small glasses which look like those in your grandmother's cabinet. But boy, do they understand how to fill those small glasses with flavour! And with a 'bang!'. Small doses of dark alcohol, exquisite bitters, mild sweetness and some aromas that make everything alright. So, just taste away!
Also on weekends, check out the newly-opened "Pfauenzimmer" just next door. It is the pretty little-brother Bar with a more custom drink selection.
Chulo!
