Want to learn how to make some folk art? Come to the Craft and Folk Art Museum (CAFAM). The gallery and outside space are home to contemporary local craft and folk art.
Established in 1973, CAFAM is located right across from the La Brea Tar Pits, or Page Museum. These three museums make up Los Angeles' Museum Row on Wilshire Boulevard.
Visitors explore three stories of different types of folk art ranging from pottery, photography, and furniture. There is a small folk and craft store where you can buy neat gifts.
What is great about CAFAM is the usage of daily objects by artists who exhibit here. Current artists use fabric, wood, sponges, and broken pottery pieces to make their art. CAFAM hosts do-it-yourself art workshops from time to time, please check the website. I learned how to make paper from Army uniforms, spin pottery, crochet, and make bracelets using interesting materials at CAFAM. You can also learn how to carve traditional Japanese woodwork for a price at these events.
During countywide art events, CAFAM is free for visitors along with many other galleries on Museum Row.
Come curious to learn and make art. There are some craft nights. Check museum schedule for time and availability.
