I am fortunate enough to live in the state that is the source of the majority of fruits and vegetables for the U.S., because we have the greatest Farmer's Markets.
In Santa Monica alone, we have a Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday Farmer's market in three different locations. My favorite is the Sunday Farmer's market on Main Street. There are vendors selling local vegetables and California specialties, such as dates. I cannot walk past the date stand without sampling at least four types (who knew there were so many different types of dates?!) and buying two! But if you're on vacation and don't need to do any grocery shopping, this Farmer's Market is still worth the visit.
About half the space is used for ready-to-eat foods, either from local restaurants or from Farmer's Market regulars. I love to grab a burrito and eat it on the grass listening to the live music. It's kid friendly as well, and they usually have activities such as face painting or cooking classes. I go towards the end of the day to avoid the crowds, but I still manage to pick up some wonderful produce!
"Watts Towers" in Los Angeles is a national landmark, built by a talented Italian immigrant over the duration of 30 years. They remind me of Antoni Gaudi.
