Travel Town is the coolest train station/museum in California. It's an interactive train park (inside of Griffith Park) that allows you to see the steam engines up close and personal. You can even climb inside three train cars! It's a magical experience for parents and kids, AND a unique date idea.
In addition to being a museum, it's also a park with a train track offering miniature train rides. It costs $2 for kids, $4 for adults. The ride includes two laps around the park and gives you a great view of the landscape and 134 highway. As far as locomotives go, one could even rent one and have a special event inside. Docent-led tours are held the 2nd Saturdays of the month from 11:00 am until 3:00 pm.
Best of all, it's free. Come to a less crowded part of Griffith Park and enjoy the trains. If you're a real train enthusiast, there's another museum (less than a mile away, also inside Griffith Park) called the Los Angeles Live Steamers Railroad Museum. Perfect for picnics! Excellent for unique photo opportunities! Feel nostalgic and travel back in time with the Travel Town museum.
