I am the queen of donuts. I absolutely love them. They are the only American food that brings me joy (besides cupcakes). High and low, far and wide, I'm always on the prowl for a good donut.
LA is the mecca of strip mall donut joints, but not all donuts are created equal. Very few are made fresh from dough to icing. Winchell's and Yum Yum are like the Walmart of donuts (cheaply made and look nicer than they taste). Trendy donut shops are all the rage with their maple/bacon/fruity pebbles concoctions, but more often than not, their dough isn't fresh. I can taste a freezer's influence. If I'm consuming sugar, it better be worth it.
I've been to almost a hundred donut shops in LA, and the best donut in Los Angeles is:
Foster's Chocolate Glaze in La Cañada Flintridge.
It's a glazed raised donut with a thin layer of chocolate frosting on top! GUSH! It's light, fresh, and fluffy with the perfect proportion of frosting/dough ratio.
Foster's is open 24 hrs and they make donuts fresh throughout the day (not just 4-6am). If you're looking for a great donut in LA, then visit Foster's in La Cañada Flintridge.
*If you're driving this way just for a donut, I recommend hiking it off at Deukmejian Wilderness Park or Echo Sunset Prieto Trail Loop near NASA laboratories.
