La Luz de Jesus Gallery is an art gallery, bookstore, and novelty toy store. Located a little bit east of Hollywood towards Los Feliz, La Luz is a popular gallery in the area. Do not park at the Goodwill next door.
Established by art collector Billy Shire in 1986, you can see him there sometimes. Ranging from folk, outsider art, religious, sexually deviant, and pop art, La Luz de Jesus has always been a magnet of creativity. The art at La Luz has been described as underground and counterculture.
What is great about this gallery is that it is only half a gallery. Patrons have the ability to browse through art and film books in its bookstore section. You can buy odd toys and other novelty products in another section of the store. I love the amount of old Japanese toys and Godzilla models you can buy at the store.
Come as an art patron, toy collector, or even an exhibitor. On its website there is a form for submitting your art.
Come for the group shows where La Luz de Jesus exhibits previous artists throughout the year in an all-encompassing show. Check this link for the exhibits for the year 2018. I also really like their group shows. Check their website, I believe they have them pretty often.
Finally, there's a bar in the parking lot during openings. Wait for wine, beer, and pretzels. :)
