Kings County Distillery is one of New York City's few whiskey distilleries, and claims the title as the oldest distillery since prohibition. If you enjoy whiskey, you will love this unique little spot, with its charming tasting room and informative tours.
The tasting room is located in an old castle-like gatehouse in Brooklyn Navy Yard. Steeped in Brooklyn history, the decor seductively mixes the patina of antique furniture with the trendy accouterments of modern bars. It is, fittingly, old fashioned. Although a small space, the room is used well with lots of cozy corners for conversation, including a coveted table in the castle tower itself. There are also a couple of long tables in the center of the room that can accommodate groups.
Tours are given Wednesday through Sunday. The tour costs $16 and includes a tasting as well as admission to their "Boozeum." The tour lasts about one hour, discussing the history and science of distilling whiskey. You can check their website for tour schedules.
There is also a gift shop on-site, where you can also buy bottles of whiskey of all sizes. They make great gifts!
