Sometimes you just want to get away, but how can you when you live in the middle of an urban city? Luckily Philadelphia has one of the largest parks in the world and it is easily accessible. The Wissahickon Park is just 1,800 acres of the massive 10,500 acre park system. Getting lost in the woods is not hard to do with all of that space. Getting to the park is easy too, since it is connected to center city by the Schuylkill River Trail just behind the Philadelphia Art Museum.
One great thing about the park is it has everything, whether you want trout filled creeks and wooded trails, or if you want open fields and waterfalls. The park offers horseback riding, fishing, bike trails, hiking trails, running trails, bird watching, and wildlife galore. The park is great for those just wanting to stroll through the countryside or for the more adventurous that want to tackle rock climbing.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Wissahickon creek was home to dozens of mills and factories along the creek, which are all a thing of the past now, but their remnants still remain.
