The Castle of Karlberg was built in 1634 and has been a pleasure palace for the royal family from the late 17th Century to the late 18th Century. When the old royal castle Three Crowns burned down in 1697, Karlberg Castle became the temporary refuge of the King and his government. Today, the castle houses a royal military academy and there are training facilities and running tracks in the park behind the castle. The castle itself is not open for visitors, but you can visit the beautiful and interesting park free of charge. It is open daily 06:00 – 22:00 and is an excellent place for taking photos, in fact it is a popular spot for wedding photo shoots.

Karlbergs Castle park is quite large and houses some odd, less famous sights such as a runestone from the Viking Ages, the Temple of Diana, as well as the grave of the kings beloved dog Pompe. Pompe was buried in 1699 and it is common to see fresh flowers on his grave still today.

You can get to Karlbergs Castle by taking the green subway line (for 6 minutes) and get off at S:t Eriksplan. Then it is a 7-minute walk along Rörstrandsgatan until you are at the castle.
