Woodhenge Tampere

Tampere's own Stonehenge

Art & culture
""Woodhenge" in Tampere is an artistic structure made out of rotting lime tree trunks modeled after the original Stonehenge in England."

The "Woodhenge", situated on top of a hill between the tram and highway between central Tampere and the southern neighborhood Hervanta, is an artistic structure made out of rotting lime tree trunks, harvested from around the Tampere area. As the name suggests, it is inspired by and modeled after the Stonehenge that stands in Salisbury, England.

This work of art is actually a preservation project planned and built by Tampereen Infra Oy with the aim to promote biodiversity and provide a habitat for rare and endangered fungi, insects and birds. At the moment, a guided trail is being built in the surrounding area that will give more information on the project and the materials used in its construction.

Even though Woodhenge is meant to be admired while traveling on the Hervanta tram and highway, it is actually very possible to access the hill it is situated on, if you're up for a little hike. While you are not allowed to touch or climb Woodhenge, it is quite interesting to observe it up close and take pictures of it. And during snowy winters, Woodhenge's hill is perfect to slide down from on a sled!
