Let's start with a fun fact, did you know that Tel Aviv is the world's third-largest sushi center per capita, after Tokyo and New York? You will find more sushi places in Tel Aviv than hummus places! Surprised? Don't be. People here love sushi, it is fresh and light and great food to eat when you are looking for something small and delicious.
A few months ago, right in the center of the city, a new sushi restaurant opened, it's called Shi Shi. Well, I won't call it a sushi place (they don't call it a sushi place either...). Shi Shi has transformed sushi into street food. For 33-50 NIS, you will get a huge roll that looks like a burrito made from rice. You can choose between different fillings which are wrapped in rice. They have fish, chicken, or vegetable fillings.
I tried the Spicy Red Tuna- with red cabbage, cucumber, pickled ginger and herbs (coriander), sweet potato chips, black sesame aioli-wasabi sauce. It was huge, fresh, and delicious. It is definitely a new way to eat your sushi (or Shi Shi roll).
So if you love sushi and want to try a new Tel Avivian version of the traditional Japanese food, try Shi Shi. I am pretty sure that it will surprise you!
