Just outside the city center, a revived neighborhood is taking shape. The area surrounding the old power plant is known as the ‘Energiekwartier’ (Energy Quarter). Slowly but surely, this part of town will develop into a hip and happening area. One part of the power plant has been turned into a huge exhibition hall: there is a theatre and, recently, the restaurant and brewery De Prael opened its doors.
The restaurant can be found on the Esperantoplein, a square where new houses are being built at the moment. Perhaps not the most welcoming area, but you should absolutely check it out. Why? For starters, I love the concept of the restaurant. The Prael is a foundation that offers employment opportunities for people facing major obstacles to entering the job market.
Secondly, the Prael is a brewery. It originated in Amsterdam, but will start brewing local beer in The Hague soon. The selection of beers, ranging from a blond to an IPA or a pale ale, has something for everyone. Last but not least: the Prael offers food and beer for unbelievable prices. On weekdays, you can have a meal and a beer for around 10 euros. I often come here on a Wednesday night for a pizza and a beer.
The Prael is not just a great place to spend your evening: one corner of this (pretty big) restaurant is reserved for people who need a work space. It can think of worse places to open my laptop!
