Perhaps I'm one in a million, but I think the municipal pool scene is highly underrated! I have swam at some pretty neat pools in my travels (most recently in Iceland), and it makes for a refreshing (literally...) break from the typical travel routine. Although I wouldn't place a public pool as a priority destination on your trip to Toronto, I certainly encourage a visit to Trinity Community Recreation Centre for its indoor pool as a great spot to take a break from tourist-ing, and to do some quiet laps alongside the locals. It's located right in Trinity Bellwoods Park, one of Toronto's largest downtown parks and is easily accessible via the Queen streetcar.
After you go for a swim, Queen Street West awaits (or wander up to Dundas West, to the north). Grab a coffee, window shop, have lunch, hang out in Trinity Bellwoods park, or just meander. The possibilities are endless.
Admission is affordable, at $3.50. Lockers are available; just make sure to bring your own lock (as well as shampoo and a towel). Check the daily schedule ahead of time on the website. Have a good swim, and see you there!
