Big in history and culture but quite small in size, Venice’s buildings form a proper labyrinth of streets, lanes, canals and bridges. Resembling at times the Moroccan medians, where the sky seems to disappear from above one’s head, covered by the tilted walls of the houses, this island has the same unsettling gift.
When wandering aimlessly around Venice, which is one of the best ways to find hidden gems by the way, one is very likely to find themselves walking into an ever darker lane as the light dims out, blocked by the red-tile walls. It is also possible to be forced to retrace one’s step because the lane you chose leads to a dead end, or maybe a canal, or maybe because the narrowness and uncertainty of the calle in front of you are simply too much to face!
This is the case when we talk about Calle Varisco. With its width of just 53cm, it has been universally declared the narrowest calle in Venice. Located in Cannareggio district, not far from Campo Santi Apostoli, this attraction is as difficult to cross as it is to find. The best way to go there is to look for Campo Widman where you can see some locals.
