When visiting Venice, apart from all the tourist attractions and restaurants, you might feel like wanting to explore some more local, informal and rustic events. If this is the case and you happen to be in Venice from the end of the Spring until the end of August, then I would strongly suggest that you check out the “Sagra” (fair) of the time.
These events take place one by one in different locations all around the island. Usually, they take place in the piazzas of some of Venice’s most famous churches, such as San Piero de Casteo, San Francesco della Vigna, San Giacomo da l’Orio and so on, but some of them can also take place elsewhere.
In each and every of these event you will find local food at a very convenient price, live music events often including performances by local artists, a village-like atmosphere where long wooden tables are often shared between different groups of people who get to know each other for the very first time.
Beware! These events are likely to be packed. Therefore, if you do not go there as early as 6:00 or 7:00, you are most likely to have to endure long queuing lines in order to get food. However, drinks are usually served quickly.
List of events of 2024
Sant‘Antonio (6 -13 June); Venice
San Piero di Casteo (25-29 June); Venice
San Giacomo da l’Orio (16-25 July); Venice
Madonna dell’apparizione (26 July- 2 Agosto); Pellestrina
Sagra di Portosecco (11-16 August); Pellestrina
Sagra del Peocio (19-25 August); Alberoni
