If there is something more local than having some seafood spaghetti in a typical trattoria hidden in between some dim-light street, then that must be seeing how seafood is handled for those who want to cook it themselves.
The Rialto Fish Market, located a few steps from the homonymous bridge, is the heart of this enterprise. Both the restaurant staff and Venetians come here to buy the best products in town.
The first lights of dawn see the fish merchants prepare their stalls, arranging the great variety of fresh, only a few hours old fish from nearby harbours. Then, at 7:30 AM, the market opens. Being both located underneath a wonderful loggia. The two parts of the fish market are worth visiting not only for the buildings' beauty and the surrounding scenarios but also for the atmosphere. There, you will hear merchants scream their offers, sometimes mocking each other, and the Venetian dialect is spoken more often than almost anywhere else.
Furthermore, next to the fish market, you will also find other stands selling local products from Venice and the Veneto region, such as artichokes from Sant Erasmo (Venice) and red chicory from Treviso.
