Located on the upper hill of Hrazdan Gorge in Arabkir, the Holy Mother of God Chapel (Surb Astvatsatsin Matur), known locally as Malakani Matur, is different from the other churches of Yerevan. Built in 2017, it’s small and quiet, with no priests, no scheduled services, and no official caretakers. Instead, it lives through the love of local people.
What makes Holy Mother of God Chapel special is how deeply personal it feels. Locals visit to light candles, pray, and leave something behind — a stone, a note, a memory. Around the chapel, you’ll find khachkars (cross-stones) and handmade memorials, many of them built by ordinary people in gratitude or hope. Some even have writings on them: a father thanking God for his son’s safe return from the army, or someone honoring a loved one lost.
There’s something incredibly sincere here. No rituals, no ceremony — just honest, quiet belief. I come here not for tradition, but for that raw, human expression of faith you won’t often see in more formal churches.
You can reach the chapel by walking down from Arabkir Park toward the Hrazdan Gorge. A few meters down, you will see it on your right.
