Salt Lake is one of Yerevan’s best-kept secrets, located in the Erebuni district. Despite being relatively unknown to many locals, this small artificial lake has a cult following, thanks to the myths and beliefs surrounding its healing properties.
Formed in the 1970s near a plaster factory, Salt Lake gets its name from the high salt content in the water. The emissions from the factory led to the creation of two lakes, just a few meters apart. The first lake has a 13% salt concentration, while the second, smaller lake is saltier, at 25%, almost as salty as the Dead Sea’s 34%.
Locals have long claimed that swimming in the Salt Lake can ease joint pain, especially in the legs and arms. Some even say that breathing in the salty air improves lung health and overall breathing. There are also people who love to rub the mud from the smaller lake on their bodies, believing it has healing properties.
But Salt Lake isn’t just about the supposed health benefits. It’s a peaceful escape, surrounded by reeds and old factories. After a swim, there’s a fresh water fountain nearby where people refresh themselves and drink. It’s the perfect spot to relax, swim, or simply enjoy the natural surroundings.
Tip: It's a bit off the usual transport routes, so I recommend taking a car or taxi to get there.
