Tokhmakh Park, also known as Lyon Park, is one of the chillest spots in Yerevan, though it’s a bit off the beaten path. Located in the Erebuni district, it’s a peaceful retreat far from the city's center. The first time I visited, I was surprised to find such a European-style park right in the city.
Tokhmakh Park is built around Vardavar Lake, an artificial body of water with a fascinating history. Dating back to the reign of Argishti I, who founded Yerevan more than 2800 years ago, it’s been renovated several times over the centuries, including during the 1500s by Iranian rulers, the Soviet era, and again in the 2000s with the help of the Lyon city governor, which is why it's now called Lyon Park.
Today, Tokhmakh Park is a popular spot for locals to work out, jog, or just relax. You'll find people running around the lake at all hours, taking in the peaceful views. The park also attracts a diverse crowd — moms with babies, elderly people chatting on benches, couples walking hand-in-hand, and even people paddling in boats or canoes. It’s a great place to escape the noise of the city, whether you’re looking to exercise or just relax.
Tip: To get there, take the metro to Sasuntsi Davit station and walk straight down Sasuntsi Davit Street — it's just past the gas station.
