Zaviki Ghars is one of those places you don’t forget. It's a fast food spot in Yerevan named after its founder, Zavik, and the only thing on the menu: ghars. Imagine something like shawarma, but in the bread. It is simple — just meat, bread, a few other ingredients, and their legendary secret sauce. That’s it. And that’s all they’ve ever needed.
This place has been around for decades. When I was a teenager, we used to take the bus from the city center all the way to 3rd Mas - a suburban district of Yerevan - just to get one. Back then, Zaviki Ghars was already famous. The recipe hasn’t changed since, and neither has the loyalty of its fans.
Today, there are a few locations across the city, including one in the city center, on Saryan Street near the old post office. It still feels like a secret, though. There’s usually a line, but it moves fast. Locals come for the flavor, the nostalgia, and the kind of consistency you don’t often find in fast food.
If you want to try true Armenian street food — not the polished, tourist-friendly version, but the real local favorite — Zaviki Ghars is the place.
