Fighting food waste has never been easier than with the help of the Äss-Bar. Because when you stand in front of the huge amount and range of products and look at their price, you can’t help but buy yourself a little treat.

Äss-Bar is a bakery selling products from the day before that they picked up at partner bakeries. It ranges from pastry, croissant, and little sweet bread, but also sandwiches, quiche slices, or salads. As it is not fresh from the day, the price is also sharply reduced. And from experience, I always loved my purchase and could in no way tell that it was baked the day before.

This initiative, which started in Zürich but can now also be found in several other Swiss cities, is in my eyes very important to support. And if I can see locals appreciating it, tourists should also definitely give it a try! Furthermore, the company tries as much as possible to further recycle what they could not sell themselves. In Zürich in particular, they collaborate with a brewery that brews beer where a part of the malt is replaced with old bread from the Äss-Bar! They also use the unsold product to produce biofuel.

So for all these reasons, you should stop by one of the Äss-Bar stores. You can find one in the old town, one by Stadelhofen, and a food truck stops on the ETHZ campus (check here for where and when).
