A long-time student friend contacted me after about 25 years because he was in Zurich for a few hours. I gave some thought where we should meet and then suggested Loft Five. It's close to the train station and, as a good host, I wanted to give a nice impression of modern Zurich. It was the perfect location: quick to get to and with all the options. We could choose between lunch, bar food or just drinks.
The uncovered high ceiling with cables and pipes immediately shows that this is a loft, but the floors and walls are in dark wood tones, giving the room a cozy feel. As do the velvety armchairs, sofas, and the Persian carpet on the floor. The sparkling chandeliers stand out from this and skillfully set the scene for the rooms. The floor-to-ceiling windows also let in plenty of natural light, and you can see the urban crowd rushing past on Europaallee.
On a Tuesday early afternoon, there are just a few guests, but it is an excellent place for a chat. We took a seat on one of the sofas and reminisced about the last twenty years over ginger tea and cappuccino. Time flew by — almost like the old days.
As always, the service is friendly and fast. The terrace in front of the restaurant also is inviting. I will gladly come back and try the restaurant or the cocktails (the drink list is also very lovely).

"Weisses Kreuz" in Zurich isn't fancy - it's probably what some people would call an 'old man's pub', but what other pub has a 'Stammtisch' for regulars?
