Ask anyone from the Netherlands if their (grand)mother (or father) has a family recipe for apple pie and I will guarantee you, most of them will have one. It’s one of those things you can long for when you visit your parents at home and you hope there will be an apple pie. But I need to fear no more, because I can visit Winkel 43.
Yes. There is a place where they have good apple pie. Try any (machine made) apple pie in the city and you will most likely chew on a piece of hard apple core, a sharp piece of apple skin or something you can’t even identify. My mom makes the best apple pie and I will most likely dislike any other.
But there is a little apple shaped sun on the horizon. Winkel 43, located nicely in the Jordaan sells the best apple pie in Amsterdam. Yes, somehow their homemade apple pie has something homey about it. It’s also a good example of a Dutch apple pie (since every country has its own version).
When you are near Winkel 43, you are hereby obliged to try the apple pie. No need to worry, they are open ’till 3 in the morning on Friday and yes I have had the pie slightly drunk. It maybe made it even better.
