Mooi means beautiful in Dutch and that is a perfect description for this restaurant. Mooi is a very charming small place in a backyard in the Karolinenstraße / Karoviertel. They offer very good food, high quality and kind of extravagant. It’s not cheap, especially in the evening, but it is worth its prices.

Don’t worry, it is not that kind of snobby or affected place. The atmosphere is very warm, cosy and down-to-earth, the interior is simple but elegant. That’s what I like so much, to have really upper-class food in a pleasant atmosphere with nice guests and a lovely service.

Mooi offers seasonal ingredients now in winter for example winterly salads with hazelnut and avocado, roast goose with walnut-cream and marzipan-quark-dumplings. Furthermore they provide really creative and fine aperitives such as cremont with ginger.

During the week they are only open for lunch, on Friday and Saturday you can have dinner there. You should book a table when you go there in the evening.

The guys from the Krug (check the Krug Weinstubezi article) opened up a second space: Oberstübchen. The Oberstübchen is located directly over the club Pudel Club (check the Golden Pudel Club article) in the Park Fiction (check the Parc Fiction article). 

You can sit on their awesome terrace now and enjoy the first sunbeams. Inside it is very cozy, with lots of wooden furniture and with a fantastic view over the harbor. You can enjoy different dishes, from soups and salads, to pasta or coq au vin. On the weekends they offer really good breakfast. They have some cultural events in the evening as well, so you might want to check their facebookpage for that. 

Not much to say, it is a nice place, with good food and good wine. You should go there. 

In the middle of the scenic street called Schulterblatt there is “Transmontana”, a small Portuguese café.

When the sun shines you can sit at one of the countless tables outside on the Piazza and have a great view to the alternative Rote Flora (check the Rote Flora article). Watch the fashionable, stylish but as well as the alternative crowd with big sunglasses.

Inside it is very cosy, but sometimes a bit noisy in the rush hour. A neighbourly, Portuguese family built up this fine café-place, which has a simple, but one of the best independent breakfasts in town.

A delicious and tasty combination is an individual filled toast or croissant and fresh orange juice. The “Galão” (Portuguese milk-coffee) is not the best, but it is the local drink here.

Try the very sweet but original, traditional “Pasteis de Nata”. The service is friendly and in not-busy-times they tell you more about the family-pictures behind the bar.

Oh, and by the way, in the evenings don’t miss the Sagres (Portuguese beer).

This convivial welcoming place is always very crowed, because you’ll get really good food. More important for a few people: real big portions for little money during the whole day.

Breakfast from 09:00 and lunch from 11:30. Actually I could recommend everything on the menu. My favourite is Pasta Marco Polo with fried chicken slices, broccoli and tomato sauce for €6.90. The French Fries there are the best in the Schanze. If you wanna go for breakfast, they have student breakfast with bread, butter, jam, honey, cheese, sausage, orange juice, fruit salad and (all you can drink) coffee.

Sometimes you cannot find a place. Ask the super friendly staff if there will be a free table soon and just wait few minutes.

It is quite possible that you overlook this place at first because it has such a small entrance. I have to admit, the first few times I didn’t even notice its presence just around the corner where I work. Next to the “Quán Dò”, the “Websters” has become my favourite spot for breakfast and lunch because of the personal touch that come with it.

The concept of  “Websters” is to adapt the dishes to the time of the day. So the variety changes from breakfast, lunch, coffee & cake and longdrinks for the early after work time (in Germany most people quit work at 16:30 / 17:00). The costs are extraordinary low compared to other locations in the city centre.

The owners are so cute and always up for a nice chat and. No seriously, I doubt you will spend you whole day on this spot but it is the right place to make a break from exploring the city. I love this place because it makes me feel home on long working days. I think it is something personal.
