Tucked away in a residential area lies one of Amsterdam’s lesser-known gems: Frankendael Park. The Watergraafsmeer, where the park is located, used to be the countryside escape for wealthy Amsterdammers in the 16th and 17th centuries, when the city became too warm in the summer. Back then, elegant country estates (buitenplaatsen) were scattered around the area, from which only one is left: Huis Frankendael, now the centerpiece of the park.
I lived next to this park for a few years, and it became my favourite oasis for relaxation. It’s not large, but is quite varied and perfect for a peaceful walk or a refreshing run. My favourite part is the forest-like area with a pond. In spring, wild garlic covers the forest floor in a flowery carpet, filling the air with a delicious scent. The garden surrounding Huis Frankendael is another lovely spot, where graceful statues await to be discovered among the bushes.
On the opposite part of the park, you’ll find volkstuinen (allotment gardens), where you can stroll and admire the lovingly tended plots. In the open field, people sunbathe or have a picnic on sunny days. A stork family nests here every year, and they tend to capture everyone’s attention.
Every month, the park hosts Pure Markt, a market featuring local food and artisanal products. If you’re hungry, you’re in luck — there are two restaurants in the park, both worth visiting: Merkelbach and De Kas.
